1 Thessalonians 5:14 | People Are Complex

Dr. Ed Welch begins his classic work “Motives” with this simple and yet profound statement, “People are complex.” Anyone who has ever met a human knows that’s true.

A person’s external behaviors often reveal and sometimes mask their deeper motivations. Those motivations are framed by a person’s own spiritual dispositions, physical make-up, successes, failures, fears, desires, and family and community cultures.

With that said, in this week’s text the apostle Paul instructs us to be good physicians, if you will, who know how to apply the right medicine to the right problem so that people who are stuck in a spiritual struggle might grow and overcome it to the glory of God.
