The Ethic of Love

Love is the highest Christian ethic we have. That’s a big statement, but it’s rooted in the character of a big God who is, in His very nature, love.

In this week’s text the apostle Paul is going to begin a long section of ethical teaching that ought to flow from a renewed mind. At the heart of it is agape love – a selfless, sacrificial love that doesn’t keep score, that doesn’t give with an expectation of return, and that always seeks God’s best for those who are loved.

If you are a Christ-follower, you have been shown this kind of love. The question becomes, are you showing it to others. Our text gives us something to measure ourselves against to see if our love is truly a Christian kind of love. I pray that, as a church, we can measure up to this high ethical calling.
